Galway WFC wrapped up their first National League season with a 3-2 victory over neighbours Castlebar Celtic.

Even with eight regulars missing from their starting line-up, Westport United showed no mercy to Charlestown Athletic in the Sportspark on Sunday. No less than seven different Westport United players got on the score sheet in their 7-2 route of the east Mayo side. Westport struck four goals on the bounce from injury time in the first half until the 56th minute of the contest, to turn at 1-0 lead into a 5-0 lead and sap the fight out of a Charlestown Athletic team who up until that point had been doing their best to hang in with home-team.

Castlebar Celtic booked their place in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League Cup final for the second year in a row thanks to a 3-1 win over Peamount United in Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon. The Hoops are becoming quite the cup side, having made the final of this competition last year along with the final of the FAI Women's Senior Cup earlier this year in the Aviva Stadium. They go on to meet Wexford Youths in the final of the league cup on May 18.

This weekend 42 of the 43 teams taking part in the Mayo Football league will kick off their campaign for the new season. The odd team out being Ballyvary Blue Bombers who are part of the seven team League One this season. The big change this year in the league format is the return to 10 team divisions in the top three levels this season after a couple of years with eight team divisions.

Mayo League side bow out of EA Sports Cup

The Mayo League representative side made the short trip to Eamon Deacy Park in Terryland on Tuesday night for this first round EA Sports Cup tie. But unfortunately they came up short against the SSE Airtricity League side after holding them at bay for more than 75 minutes of the contest. Galway FC had been pushing for a goal all night, but Mayo League goalkeeper Gary Cunningham had been in fantastic form. When he was finally beaten it came from the boot of Marty Owens who fired home at the back post from close range after being set up by Jake Keegan. The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes before the end when Keegan riffled the ball past Cunningham from out on the right hand side after some neat footwork to create the space for the shot.

International duty for locals

Castlebar Celtic pair Aileen Gilroy and Emma Hansberry are currently on international duty with Sue Ronan’s Ireland women’s squad in Cyprus. The pair are part of a 23 strong team for the tournament that saw them play Cyprus on Wednesday, before they take on South Korea today (Friday), and Switzerland on Monday, with a positional play-off taking place next Wednesday, March 12.

The Mayo League announced late last week that they will be scrapping the eight-team divisions from the league, following a three-year experiment with the smaller divisions and moving back to ten-team divisions.
